Is proofreading the same thing as copyediting?
Though many people use the terms
interchangeably, proofreading and editing
are two different stages of the revision process. Both involve
close and careful reading, but they focus on different aspects
of the writing and employ different techniques. The definitions
of the two terms are given below.
Copyediting - Copyediting is what you begin
doing as soon as you finish your first draft. Copyediting
can be done on several levels: Content, Overall Structure,
Clarity, Citations etc.
Proofreading - Proofreading means a final,
careful check on a document. It is a technical process,
which always involves finding spelling, grammar and formatting
errors.

What do you do for proofreading?
In Proofreading,
we basically make sure the text is accurate, the facts are
accurate, the spelling is accurate, the graphics are looking
right, the website links are working etc.

What do you do for copyediting?
In Copyediting, we identify and correct
errors in word usage/choice, grammar, awkward phrasing,
paragraphing and help in removing excess "fluff" from a
story, making it clear and clean. If we are curious about
something, we make suggestions and even interview the writer
for more information. If again, something is boring, we
note that too and ask the writers what point they're trying
to make. Hence, we will provide suggestions about edits
that might need further explanation and suggest other edits
that were not made to the website or document.
We
also see and make comments on whether the story reads smoothly, the information flows from one paragraph to the next, the quotes add to and support the previous information,
the identifying or given information is present and consistent, the visual design and text formatting are consistent
and a lot more. We can edit web pages by directly accessing your web site, and we can work in
HTML.

How can we work together?
We mostly work through e-mails. People mostly forward their
website URLs/ documents to us by email, and we work back and forth electronically.

, with the Subject line - Proofreading/Copyediting Services. Please mention your name and
contact e-mail address. In the case of a website, send us the
URL; if it is a document, send the English writing, which you want us to proofread and
copyedit, as an e-mail attachment in Microsoft Word.
You
should end your email message by stating the no of pages in the website or
document. We will respond by email with our comments and an estimate, normally within 1-2 days.
If you do not hear back from us, it means your message has not reached us, so please send it again. Thank you.
After proofreading and copyediting the
matter into our word processor, we will e-mail the edited/
revised material (the word processor documents) back to
you, when and how we have arranged with you. We also can
edit web pages by directly accessing your web site, and
we can work in HTML.
Pay in advance and as soon as you have made your payment, we will begin our work for you.

What would be your Fee schedule for

Standard Proofreading and
Copyediting job : $5/ page. Fee can also depend on complexity of project and length.
For Professional Resume Preparation,
the price is $70 and for Proofreading and Copyediting your existing resume, the price is $30.
Similarly, the price for Professional Cover Letter Writing is $70 and the price for Proofreading and Copyediting your existing Cover Letter is $30.

Can't I proofread my copy myself?
Unfortunately, for all of us, proofreading our own work can be very difficult, and in some cases, pointless.
This is because the same mental processes that went into composition are the ones you will use to correct your work.
But, when a proofreader examines your work with the fresh eyes and impartial knowledge of English, there is a sure way to guarantee the grammatical accuracy of your work.

I have a spell checker on my computer. Why do I need you?
A spell checker is just a tool. It doesn't know the difference between "two" and "too," or between "they're," "there" and "their." It cannot determine whether a particular spelling is the correct one for the context. But the people reading your work do. A properly proofed and formatted document protects your reputation and projects a professional image - qualities for which nobody should rely on their spelling checker.
